A benchmark set

When I got back into Lego, I was immediately intrigued by the modular buildings. I decided to start with Assembly Square, to see if I liked building and displaying them.

Well, that ended up being a brilliant...mistake. Brilliant, because Assembly Square is exquisite. The build experience is magnificent; the set itself, gorgeous; the amount and variety of detail is almost unparalleled. It looks sensational when it's done. There are some interesting building techniques and some cool parts usage. I will never get tired of peering in through those bakery windows, or enjoying the little dog at the cafe, or admiring the covered walkway past the fountain. It's just a stunning set and easily makes a centerpiece for any modular collection.

So why do I say it was a mistake? Well, I'm sort of joking about that, but it set an impossibly high bar. I started my modular collection with what is, in my opinion, easily the best modular set that there is. It's not that the rest have been disappointing - I love them all - but I'm not sure anything will ever quite live up to this one for me.

Get it before it's gone: this one is a masterpiece.
Simply the best!

I haven't built Legos since I was a kid. I walked into a Lego store not expecting anything, and I saw this set alongside other modular ones. I was taken aback at how intricate and complicated these builds looked. My child self would have loved these sets, so I decided to purchase Assembly Square.

This set was simply a joy to assemble. I was amazed at how innocuous Lego pieces can go together to create something rather detailed and true-to-form, such as the piano, camera & backdrop, or dentist chair (my favorite). I was filled with wonder while assembling this, trying to figure out what the final product of each phase might look like. The details, both architecturally and the furnishings, are beautifully executed. These are definitely not the Legos of my childhood, and I say that in the best way possible. Kudos to the designers of this set. I think my two favorite unique elements of this set are the reflective mirror and the tiny baby minifigure.

I do not regret my purchase, and now I am assembling other modular sets. Assembly Square definitely seems like the zenith, though, so keep that in mind if you are looking for your first set. Might want to grab it and save it for later, after doing a few others.
Just excellent

This is a retired product, so won't make the review too long.

We play with these buildings as a family. From a building perspective, it's brilliant - they used bulldozer buckets to form the roof! From a play perspective... my kids love it. They've been playing with the set for days now.

The only negative that I'd raise is the number of mini-figs. This really should have had a Ninjago-level number of minifigs. The courtyard really needs 6+ figs to feel "alive", which doesn't leave a lot of extra figs to fill out the buildings. This set could easily have 18 figs and not feel crowded.
Disappointing .. too many missing pieces

My son bought this Lego set for his 12th birthday. I was sceptical about the price tag but when he promised to earn the money by himself we allowed him to buy it. He did several jobs over the summer (incl mowing neighbours lawns, running a Lego Club for young ones etc).

When the Lego set arrived, he was very excited but partway he found out that there were several missing pieces. He replaced some of them with personal bricks, but he didn't have the right type and colour of certain bricks so building it has halted. Lego's motto is 'Only the best is good enough'. Well Lego, missing pieces on a £250 set is not good enough. If this is the quality in all the more expensive sets, we will stick to cheaper sets in future. Shame to see Lego's quality control slipping on basics like checking the bricks in an expensive set.
