I recommend the made in U.S. version!

Two different species! There boots that I recently ordered from Frye website are made in Mexico. Have no pull straps and have different stitching. But that’s not all! So, I got these boots in banana size 6.5 from Frye online when they suddenly became available and that was right after ordering the last pair of the same campus boots in banana and again in size 6.5 from Nordstrom. I figured if one pair gets canceled I would still have a chance of getting the other pair! Lol! I got both pairs! So got a perfect opportunity to compare them side by side! The one I ordered from Nordstrom was the one made in the U.S. and came a few days after receiving the Frye new version of campus, made in Mexico! Absolutely two different boots! The quality of the leather is different, the sizing is different and the shape is different and the toe box is different and also the shaft circumference is different! The made in U.S. was superior and better made overall. Now I understand why people were saying they needed to size down! The made in U.S. does run a half a size bigger. The made in Mexico runs half a size smaller to me and is more narrow in the foot and much narrower in the ankle area so much so that it was almost impossible to get my foot in. I had no issue with the shaft circumference in neither of the boots. That being said, the shaft circumference was tighter in the made in U.S. boots than made in Mexico. The foot part of the made in U.S. was much wider and a bit longer as well, and had a good generous sized toe box, which I prefer, since I’m wearing mine with padded sole for extra comfort and I could wear a thick socks on top of that as well, and that ensured the perfect fit I was looking for. No need to breaking in for me in the U.S. made boots, comfy right out of the box. The stitching is so beautiful in the U.S. version. There were some sharp edges inside on the top of the made in U.S. boots that I easily fixed them with moleskin padding straps. I also CAREFULLY used a seam ripper to detach the inside pull straps because they had sharp rough edges and were somewhat bothersome and I didn’t need them at all to get the boots on. Minor issues that were fixed with ease! The rest is history! The most gorgeous comfortable boots that worth the investment. The leather quality in the U.S. made version was buttery soft and yet substantial and the color was even better. Needless to say that I returned the made in Mexico pair back to Frye and keeping those made in U.S. boots from Nordstrom!
Gorgeous, STIFF boots

I have been looking at Frye campus boots all year hoping I would find some second hand, but I finally saved up some money and bought them in banana when they came back in stock in my size! I am normally 8.5 to 9 (leaning closer to 9) and I purchased a size 9. I have long narrow feet, and I honestly don’t think I would be able to get them on if I bought an 8.5. Once I get them on they fit well, but the first 5 times I took them on and off it was a process and it took a lot of pulling. However, the leather has gotten less stiff now and I can take them on and off easily. One other factor I didn’t think about was the break in time. If you have ever owned a pair of Doc Martens it is kind of like that since they are also stiff leather boots. I made the mistake of wearing them for a long walk my first day of wearing and I got some gnarly blisters. They are way more comfortable now, but just remember to take it easy your first couple wears as they are stiff leather boots. I love the way these look and they get more comfortable with each wear. Mine are made in Mexico and don’t have the interior pull tabs, but they still fit super well and seem really well made. I am excited to wear these for many years to come!
Craftsmen of American Footwear MADE IN MEXICO

Bought these boots in Saddle for my adult daughter for Christmas. Mine were also made in Mexico. The insole in the right boot wasn't inserted properly. The insole doesn't extend to the toe and has a big ripple/bump in the instep because it wasn't extended and smoothed out. Didn't require someone putting them on to detect this. Someone knowingly moved these defective boots along the line into a box for sale. I tried to exchange them Christmas morning and the system didn't allow for an exchange in same color/size based on the reason for return even though website allowed me to create a new order/purchase. Phoned customer service first thing and was told the website was inaccurate, that they weren't available and would be restocked, but no idea when. If they aren't restocked by January 31, I can return for a refund less the cost of return for defective boots sent to me. Also was given the option of taking them to my local cobbler for repair - ridiculous. I also think the boots should be packaged with a hard/firm cardboard boot shaft versus the flimsy rolled card stock that they came with. I am hoping for a new pair as quickly as possible because it is a gift that she wants.
Mexican made; missing key elements

The Campus Boot is a favorite - the ones made in the US are a 5. Im only giving a 1 to the made in Mexico version which is what I received. Its missing the internal boot strap pulls and the side seams are only doubled on one side- the other is merely folded over and sewn. No boot pulls also means the side stitch seen on the shaft exterior is missing. The leather itself was good quality. These look like a knock- off even though they are not. There is no inside sewn tag or other mark saying Frye. Just the size and BAN.
Frye should identify country of origin since they are not the same. When I contacted Frye they said some " models" of Campus were made in Mexico and had different executions. I would expect all Campus models to have the same features. I have 5 pair of Frye boots, all bought years ago, all still excellent. I think I'll just buy vintage so they will be actual Fryes.
PS they charged me return shipping- 12.00 for these and another 12.00 for the faulty version in Saddle that I also bought. The top of the boot measurements varied by more than 2" between the pair. Their mistake. My cost.
